一九四六年生于和歌山县新宫市。十八岁时，在校内参与发行文艺校刊《车轮》，发表过小说、诗歌。高中毕业后前往东京准备考大学，后来更加入人才辈出的同人志《文艺首都》，受到更大的创作影响，发表了《十八岁》，并开始在《诗学》、《文学界》等杂志上投稿。二十七岁时，发表《十九岁的地图》，被提名角逐第六十九届芥川赏，之后发表的作品多部被提名角逐芥川赏。三十岁时，终于以《岬》获得第七十四届芥川赏。小说《枯木滩》获得第二十八届艺术选奖文部大臣新人赏。四十六岁因肾脏癌病逝。中上健次被评为“日本最后的一位文学家”，他的作品皆以故乡纪洲为背景，内容多反射自己的一生，以文学性强烈且笔触细腻的作品，深受日本广大读者的热爱。
